Shopping vintage can be overwhelming, time consuming and expensive but it can also be a joy and a unique shopping experience if you find something made by an excellent furniture maker and craftsman.
Manufacturer Mobelfabrikken Toften were leaders in modern Danish design, with a reputation for crafting exquisite pieces in natural materials and hardwoods.
This teak wood coffee table has a 16“ square inset of hand made tiles with a sphere motif in earth tones, adding both a different dimension and texture. These tiles match those of Poul Hermann Poulsen, a Danish designer who worked among others designing ceramic tiles for Gangso Furniture in Faarvang, Denmark. Some of his designs’ typical characteristics are the images of hogweed flowers and rushes and also circular patterns in various brownish shades that are trending so much today; his tiles are traded as “original 70s“ retro design antiques and are highly collectible.
I think these tables are a love/hate thing - highly collectible as modern antiques. The table is both structurally sturdy and sound with only slight signs of age, with all 4 tiles intact but unfortunately one tile has a hairline crack, however this is an impressive, well designed and built piece of modern vintage furniture. Hugely practical as the tiles will protect the wood from any heat or spills, it has a stylish Scandinavian elegance, with superb patina and fabulous colour and grain.
The conscious consumer can have a considerable positive impact on the planet with guilt-free shopping from Lightfoot & Lowe; buying second hand doesn’t mean settling for second best in the style stakes!
Mid Century is the trend that keeps on giving.
