Vintage Mid Century Hand Carved African Antelope Gazelle Table Lamp with Period Shade

A striking and characterful mid-century hand-carved antelope table lamp, combining sculptural form, warm natural wood and period lighting in one distinctive decorative piece.

Dating most likely from the 1950s–60s, this style of lamp reflects the post-war enthusiasm for African decorative carving and the organic, handcrafted pieces that became increasingly fashionable in British and European interiors during the mid-century period.

The grazing antelope has a beautifully stylised form, with its rounded body, exceptionally long slender legs and dramatic upright horns with hand-incised detailing. The richly toned hardwood displays lovely natural variations in grain and colour, while the substantial wooden plinth has a hand-worked textured surface. A slender brass upright rises alongside the carving, leaving the animal largely uninterrupted and creating a particularly strong sculptural silhouette.

The lamp comes complete with its period shade. The cream shade has an attractive textured woven appearance with decorative braided trim around both edges, complementing the warm tones of the wood and aged brass beautifully. When illuminated it gives a wonderfully soft, atmospheric light.

Standing 52 cm high complete with its shade, this is a substantial and statuesque table lamp with real decorative presence. Despite its relatively compact footprint, the elongated legs, tall horns and shade create a strong vertical form, making it ideal for adding statement lighting without requiring a large surface area.

The lamp retains its brass fitting, fabric-covered flex and inline switch. A new UK plug has been fitted and the lamp has been professionally electrically checked and PAT tested.

The carved wooden body is in good vintage condition with the small marks, variations and patina expected from a genuine piece of this age. The period shade also displays some small marks, light discolouration and signs of age, as photographed. There is age-related wear to the fabric-covered cord, also shown in the photographs. The brass upright has a small amount of movement but remains attached; this was present when the lamp was professionally checked and PAT tested.

A fabulous piece of functional vintage lighting that works equally well as decorative sculpture when switched off. Its combination of hand-carved hardwood, aged brass, exaggerated animal form and period shade gives it individuality and real presence.

Perfect for a sideboard, console, large bedside table or reading corner, and equally at home within mid-century, eclectic, bohemian or contemporary interiors. An unusual surviving piece of vintage lighting for collectors of mid-century design and distinctive decorative objects.

Safely delivering items you purchase in a timely fashion is both our priority and also one of the most challenging aspects of our business.

Wherever possible, we try to offer free kerbside delivery, contact-free, to most mainland UK addresses, either by ourselves or via our dedicated, trusted, couriers. This ensures that your purchases arrive in exactly the condition they were in when you purchased them, as accurately described on our site. You should expect delivery to be within 1 to 3 weeks of you placing the order. We will contact you directly with a firm delivery date and advise you in advance of a two hour delivery window.

Exclusions to free delivery apply, including where tolls or congestion zone fees apply, for which there will be an additional charge.

Free delivery does not apply to locations a long way away from our location in Cambridge or to areas of mainland UK not routinely covered by our trusted couriers - if this applies to your purchase, we will simply charge you what we are charged for delivery, less any Etsy fees, and notify you of this as soon as practicable after the sale goes through.

We are able to package and export items beyond mainland UK and have done so as far afield as Hong Kong and New Zealand. We regularly export to Northern Ireland and Eire and the majority of Europe. Please contact us directly for a tailored quotation.

When ordering, please supply us with your mobile ‘phone number, so we may liaise directly with you regarding delivery. Please advise if there are any delivery restrictions that will apply (such as anything other than ground floor access, parking and access restrictions etc.). We reserve the right to charge for deliveries outside of our standard terms.
