A beautifully designed vintage corner unit by British furniture maker Nathan, combining warm teak tones with the clean, practical lines that made the company’s mid-century furniture so popular.
Nathan became particularly well known for furniture influenced by Scandinavian modern design, producing well-made pieces for the British home using a combination of solid timber and carefully selected natural veneers. Good proportions, attractive grain and practical design were central to Nathan furniture, and this tall corner unit is a particularly clever example.
Its tall, architectural shape makes excellent use of an otherwise overlooked corner. Standing 193 cm high but measuring only around 45 × 46 cm at its widest point, it provides an impressive amount of display and storage while occupying remarkably little floor space.
The upper section features an attractive shaped top and two adjustable teak shelves with softly rounded front edges, followed by a larger open display area. Below, curved double doors open to useful concealed storage. The inset teak panels and chamfered detailing to the doors are particularly attractive and give the piece real character.
Despite its slender footprint, this is a substantial, solidly constructed piece of vintage furniture rather than a modern flat-pack unit. It is made as one complete piece, giving it a reassuringly sturdy feel.
We have styled ours as both a drinks and display cabinet and a home for plants, but the possibilities are numerous — books, ceramics, glassware, records and favourite collected objects can all be displayed while less decorative items disappear neatly into the cupboard below.
The combination of its strong vertical profile and softly curved lower cabinet is especially successful: it draws the eye upwards without overwhelming the room and turns an empty corner into useful storage and display space.
We currently have two units available, which offers some particularly interesting styling possibilities. Used individually they make a feature of an empty corner; as a pair they could sit in opposite corners or frame a fireplace, sideboard or doorway. They would also make a striking pair of drinks and display units in a dining or living room.
A handsome and practical example of British mid-century design — substantial in construction, beautifully proportioned and exceptionally economical with floor space.
Approximate Measurements ( at widest point )
Height 193 cm
Width 45 cm
Depth 46 cm
Two currently available and can be purchased individually or as a pair.
Both units are in good vintage condition and retain their original Nathan Furniture “the quality label” branding, confirming their maker. Only light signs of age and use are present; one unit has a small, faint surface mark to the open display shelf, which is shown in our photographs and does not detract from the overall appearance.
The price shown is for one unit.
