MCM Dynatron RSU4 Vintage Teak Vinyl Record Storage Cabinet Believed G Plan Design One Owner from New

$593.46

A wonderful opportunity to acquire an exceptionally well-preserved Dynatron RSU4 teak vinyl record storage cabinet dating from the mid-1960s, complete with its original manufacturer’s label, working lock and original key, and offered from one owner from new.

Produced by Dynatron Radio Ltd of Maidenhead, Berkshire, one of Britain’s most prestigious manufacturers of luxury radios, radiograms and hi-fi equipment, the RSU4 was designed to complement their premium music systems. Dynatron held a Royal Warrant and became renowned for exceptional engineering, uncompromising quality and elegant British design.

This particular model is widely attributed to G Plan, with several respected mid-century furniture specialists recognising the RSU4 as a G Plan design manufactured for Dynatron. The styling certainly reflects this, from the beautifully proportioned cabinet and recessed edge pull handles to the concealed castors and practical interior layout.

Finding one is becoming increasingly difficult; finding one with documented one-owner provenance, retaining its original key, manufacturer’s label and surviving in this remarkable condition for over sixty years later is rarer still.

Design

Constructed in beautifully figured teak, the cabinet has a wonderfully compact footprint while providing generous storage for a substantial vinyl collection. The lower compartment features the original angled dividers, allowing LPs to stand correctly while making album spines easier to browse.

Above sits a full-width shelf, originally intended for a turntable or audio equipment, making the cabinet every bit as practical today as it was when first purchased.

One of our favourite details is the concealed heavy-duty castors hidden behind the black plinth. Similar in quality to those found beneath vintage Ercol serving trolleys, they allow the cabinet to glide effortlessly while creating the illusion that it almost floats above the floor.

The recessed edge pull handles, quality brass hardware and original locking mechanism are all typical of the thoughtful engineering found on premium British furniture of this period.

Condition

Quite simply, the condition is exceptional.

Approaching sixty years of age, the cabinet has clearly been treasured throughout its life. The teak has retained a rich, warm colour with beautifully defined grain, while the cabinet remains wonderfully clean both inside and out.

The corners are crisp, the veneer is beautifully preserved, the doors align perfectly and the interior shows remarkably little evidence of use. These are exactly the details collectors look for and are rarely encountered on surviving examples.

The black plinth has only minor age-related paint wear to one corner, which we will sympathetically refresh before sale while preserving the cabinet’s originality.

There are two cable access holes to the rear panel behind the upper shelf. These were almost certainly added in the cabinet’s life to accommodate cables for a record player or amplifier and remain entirely practical for anyone intending to use the cabinet as originally intended today. ( Not a custom factory/ manufacturer finish).

Aside from light, honest signs of careful use consistent with its age, it presents beautifully and is one of the finest examples we have encountered.

Provenance

This cabinet has remained with one family from new, something that is becoming increasingly uncommon with specialist mid-century furniture. It still retains its original Dynatron model label, original working lock and key, adding another level of authenticity and desirability for collectors.

Why We Love It

The resurgence of vinyl has made purpose-built record storage increasingly desirable, yet very few cabinets combine genuine provenance, outstanding craftsmanship and such remarkable originality.

Unlike many surviving examples that have been heavily restored, altered or lost their original fittings, this RSU4 remains wonderfully honest. It represents a time when furniture was built to last, engineered with care and designed to be both practical and elegant.

Whether purchased by a serious collector of British mid-century furniture, a hi-fi enthusiast seeking an authentic period cabinet, or simply someone looking for an exceptional piece of functional design, this is a cabinet that will be difficult to better.

A true collector’s piece, ready to be enjoyed for another generation.
