A beautifully made pair of mid-century bedside lockers by William Lawrence of Nottingham, one of Britain’s most respected makers of the period, admired for solid craftsmanship, refined lines and exceptionally durable construction.
William Lawrence furniture was sold as quality modern bedroom and living room suites across the UK and sits comfortably in the same bracket as makers like Nathan, Stonehill, Meredew and other good British manufacturers of the 1960s and 70s. Matching left and right opening lockers are becoming a rarity and are a great find when they appear on the market - this set demonstrates exactly why William Lawrence pieces remain so sought after: heavy, robust frames, full-length brass hinges, and a clean, architectural silhouette that suits both masculine and minimalist modern interiors. Compact, stylish and practical, they offer true mid-century quality with a timeless presence.
Inside, each cabinet provides excellent storage with a fully removable shelf that simply rests on wooden runners, allowing you to adapt the space to suit your needs. The interiors are clean and refreshed, with one showing a historic ring mark at the base. The doors open smoothly on their original brass hinges and close with a satisfying click, a hallmark of proper mid-century engineering. One door opens to the left and the other to the right, making these the perfect, intentional pair for either side of a bed. Their weight and solidity immediately set them apart from mass-produced cabinets of the time, giving them a premium feel that is increasingly hard to find.
Thoughtful original details such as the skirting-board cut-outs at the rear bases allow the cabinets to sit neatly and flush against a wall, enhancing their practicality in modern homes. These cut-outs differ slightly between the two pieces—a typical feature of hand-finished or small-batch British production—but this is not visible once in place. Elegant, versatile and highly functional, this pair is ideal for both vintage collectors and contemporary interiors seeking authentic, well-crafted mid-century design presented in a compact footprint.
Specific Condition Report
The lockers are in good, clean vintage condition with expected age-related wear. One top surface displays a visible blemish to the wood, clearly shown in our photographs. One interior base has a historic ring mark, and one cabinet side shows cosmetic marking from previous handling. The skirting-board cut-outs at the rear vary slightly in shape but do not affect use or placement. Both doors sit well on their original full-length brass hinges; the magnetic catches differ slightly but each closes securely with a firm, reassuring click. All photos form an important part of the description.
