Richard Hornby Aframosia Desk Bureau 1960s

Sorry, this item has sold.

This elegant compact bureau would sit snuggly in a hallway or spare room, able to create that desk space when needed, but would also look perfectly placed standing centrepiece in a modern multi purpose living/kitchen/dining space.

The desk has wooden crafted pockets for letters or other paperwork underneath the pull down desk area is a beautifully crafted wooden drawer with dovetail joints. The pull down desk pivots on invisible interior screws and it is supported by slotting underneath the storage letter compartment. At some point some device either an arm or chain has been attached perhaps to further support this - in our opinion it supports itself. However we have included a desk arm bracket to fix in place if preferred. The desk has a working brass lock and the original key, this is always a bonus!

A bit about the Manufacturer, designer and construction:-

Fyne Ladye Furniture of Banbury was one of the few quality British makers to use solid woods for their pieces in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Richard Hornby was a very accomplished designer whose simple, elegant, clean designs were popular with well off middle class buyers looking for modern Scandinavian style pieces at the time . Fyne Ladye Furniture was rarely labelled and was retailed by top contemporary shops like Heals of London at the time

The use of afromosia by top quality British makers such as A Younger , Dalescraft and Fyne Ladye is found in pieces from around 1956 to circa 1965 at the lates . Afromosia is also sometimes known as African teak, and is not one of the easiest woods to work with and seems always to have been used in the solid as veneering with it was too difficult .

Pieces like this are always beautifully made with lovely neat dovetails, and they will have been noticeably more expensive than those by larger mass market makers like G Plan, Stag, Nathan etc.
