Vintage Remploy Formica Kitchen Table/Desk White with Grey Dotted Check Pattern and Hidden Storage Drawer

Sorry, this item has sold.

This vintage Remploy rectangular table is actually quite a heavy one, it has a solid hardwood frame, probably beech, with integrated drawer. The table top is layered plywood with a patterned formica top in a white and pale grey dotted check.

Whether for use as a prep table, kitchen island or for actually dining at, this versatile pretty and practical table is sure to become the focal point to any home, well suited in a coffee shop environment as well as rustic farmhouse kitchen! Extremely hardwearing, formica is a durable material that is hygienic and easily cleaned, making it the ideal surface for the kitchen. This would also make a strong stylish crafting table ! The list seems endless…….?
As a desk it has a very strong utilitarian design and we feel that would make a wonderful statement in any home office.

Thoroughly cleaned and re oiled along with being refinished in a buffing wax, the table is in good order with no major damage or any wobbles. The top of the table shows only light minor surface scratches and a small dint (as shown in our photos ), no lifting of the formica top. The table has a central drawer that should fit flush but at the moment is sits slightly proud. ( We will try to sand a little more to ease it in gently but don’t want to get it stuck! This does look acceptable and not abnormal and does not extend beyond the table top. Again we have shown this in one of our photos. ).

The table has the Remploy stamp underneath and the legs can be unscrewed from the table frame.

Our pictures show that it could easily seat four and possibly 6. In our photos we have used a pair of Ercol Windsor chairs which match well with the beech legs on the table also a Cesca style desk/dining chair- these are all listed separately but if interested, message us for a combined price.

Founded by Ernest Bevin, Remploy opened their first factory in 1946 in Bridgend, South Wales with the company’s original workforce mainly made up of disabled ex-miners. Today, Remploy remain one of the largest employers of disabled people in the UK.

Short History of Remploy:

Founded in 1945 and set up under the 1944 Disabled Persons Employment Act by Ernest Bevin, the Minister for Labour, Remploy began life with the opening of the first factory in 1946 in Bridgend, South Wales. First into production was a range of furniture and violas, and the company’s original workforce was made up mainly of disabled ex-miners – the original name was actually the Disabled Persons Employment Corporation, and the aim was to give disabled people a chance to support themselves and earn a decent income.
In 1946, the factory network was growing, and the company renamed themselves Remploy, derived from ‘re-employ’, until then it was called the Disabled Persons Employment Corporation.

The Second World War was over by this point, and soldiers were returning home, many badly disabled and scarred from war – Remploy provided them and many of the local disabled miners with employment, and the ability to function in the recovering country. At its height Remploy had factories spread across England, Scotland and Wales, employing over 10,000 disabled workers. Today, they remain as one of the largest employers of disabled people in the UK.

Remploy furniture is starkly utilitarian, full of clean lines and simple design. Using standard techniques, they manufactured no-frills furniture which was built to be used and made to last – from uncomplicated sideboards and room dividers to tubular stacking chairs.

Remploy furniture was designed to be simply functional. These days, such functional pieces are highly collectable, and can add a touch of mid-century modern style to any room in the house!
