A Pair of Bauhaus Blond Cesca Chairs Vintage 80s

No description needed, touted as one of the “top 10 most important chairs of the 20th century”.

BUT if you don’t know about the Cesca Chair ..............

Marcel Breuer, the Hungarian designer of the cesca cane chair, is considered one of the fathers of modernism. During his career he was a modernist architect, teacher and furniture designer. With comfort in mind, he chose to use one continuous steel tube in a cantilever style. The chair, designed at the Bauhaus, was named “cesca “ as a tribute to Breuer’s adopted daughter, Francesca.

Marcel Breuer married traditional craftsmanship with industrial methods and materials to help make tubular steel furniture an international sensation and become a modern institution. The cantilever form exploits the possibilities unique to the material and gives the chair added flexibility and comfort. This iconic seat features woven cane inserts and a beech frame. Straight lines, curves and high quality materials are the features of the cesca chair; a timeless piece of 20th Century furniture intergrating perfectly with today’s retro mix and attracting collectors of mid century furniture. Very comfortable, thanks to the lightweight metal cantilever structure that make it flexible; a perfect desk or dining chair.

This style was sold in Habitat in the 1970s, although no markings they are recognisable and are shown in some of the brochures from that period. Parker Knoll also took on manufacturing these chairs and were proud enough to stamp their name on them. Even today, they are still being produced by other manufacturers; this is hardly surprising as this is one of the ten most important chairs of the twentieth century.

This pair of chairs; I’m told were bought back in the 80s as part of a larger set and were used as boardroom office chairs - one is certainly more used than the other!
Both chairs have been degreased and cleaned, screws tightened and re polished. Both chairs show surface scratches on the chrome and some old rust marks (we have treated and polished them) and the plastic feet are still in place on the bottom of both chairs. The back rests are both in excellent vintage condition with the cane all intact. The seat pad to one chair is in good vintage condition, some tension loss but only to be expected from age and use. The other chair shows more tension loss and sagging and was obviously used by a much heavier person! ( We have noticed that the front edge has been glued, this is clear and not obviously visible. )
Both chairs are in good useable vintage condition, please look closely at our photos of the use and damage on the chairs, nothing has been hidden or disguised. The chairs have ‘Made in Italy’ stamped underneath both seat pads.
We have kept these chairs as a pair and have affordably priced them because of the damage and over use, particularly of one. Replacement seat pads are available relatively cheaply on line and are easy to fit should you chose to go down this route. Happy to help if we can!

In most circumstances, we offer free hand delivery, contact-free, kerbside to most mainland UK addresses, either by ourselves or via our dedicated, trusted, couriers. This ensures that your purchases arrive in exactly the condition they were in when you purchased them, as accurately described on our site. You should expect delivery to be within 1 to 3 weeks of you placing the order. We will contact you directly with a firm delivery date and advise you in advance of a two hour delivery window. Exclusions to free delivery apply, including where tolls or congestion zone fees apply, for which there will be an additional charge. Free delivery does not apply to areas of mainland UK not covered by our trusted couriers - if this applies to your purchase, we will simply charge you what we are charged for delivery, less any Etsy fees, and notify you of this as soon a practicable after the sale goes through, giving you the option of a full refund.
 
We are able to package and export items beyond mainland UK and have done so as far afield as Hong Kong and New Zealand. We regularly export to Northern Ireland and Eire and the majority of Europe. Please contact us directly for a tailored quotation.
