A piece of furniture from a bygone era, the archetypal 1970’s telephone table! This is from a time when you would sit down to make a call on your dial-up ‘phone, this classic British Nathan piece has considerable retro charm and can still be put to good use in the modern home as it offers lots of storage. Pop it in the hall for a sit-down spot to put shoes on, with space for a key bowl, and storage for brollies, hats & scarves; we’ve also dressed this up as a mini bar 🥂
A well-constructed piece of retro furniture, comprising of a single drawer, two open shelves, a single door cabinet and a padded seat. Overall it’s in excellent vintage condition with general wear and tear as to be expected.
It has a shelving to the left with a drawer above; this shelf is easily removed to accommodate larger items and can be neatly stored flat at the bottom. The other side of the unit has a cupboard and newly upholstered seat above.
Almost certainly manufactured around the 70s out of Burmese teak (rather exotic in its day), the colour is a mellow medium light teak. The cuts of timber would have been carefully chosen to accentuate the wood and highlight the grain. Only the very best materials would have been used in making it in this period.
In original condition this has been enhanced by a light but full refurbishment, we have cleaned, degreased and have applied several coats of Danish oil to enhance and further protect the woods and veneers.
The seat cushion has been recovered in a black corduroy fabric and has been scotch guarded for protection. The cupboard and drawer are clean on the inside and run smooth and open as they should, with the magnetic stay still strong and intact on the inside of the cupboard.
Height 56 cm
Width/Length 91 cm
Depth 37 cm
The shelf compartment is 36 cm x 36 cm
The drawer is 34cms x 29 cm
A bit about Nathan:-
Nathan Furniture is an enduring British company with a proud history. It has consistently offered elegant designs and quality craftsmanship, using a combination of solid wood and natural veneers meaning that no two pieces are the same, the natural beauty of the grain and tone are also showcased in every piece, big or small!
In 1916 Russian born Barnett Nathan began to manufacture handcrafted pieces of furniture from a workshop in Hackney Road, East London. The early years were tough ones. With the ongoing event of WWI, the firm opted to supplement its income by manufacturing munitions boxes for the Government. In 1963 the company made the decision to focus on the highly desirable Scandinavian style, teak furniture which was simple, elegant and functional. It was a nationwide success and has influenced the design aesthetic of the company since.
Our furniture pieces are pre-owned and, where possible, kept in original condition; where necessary, we repair and/or restyle to suit the modern home. As with anything old, they may come with small imperfections, but we hope you will enjoy their character and individuality as much as we do.
A light dust with a damp lint-free cloth is the best way to care for our furniture. As with any wooden furniture - we recommend you use a coaster - hot drinks and wet rings leave marks. All our furniture has been finished and protected with oils and/or wax or a clear varnish. It’s pretty hardy but it’s not bomb proof, so please respect it as you would any other piece to keep it at its best.
